2. Marathon
One of the most historic towns in Greece, Marathon is famous for is the ancient Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C., as well as the fact that it is the starting point of the annual Athens Authentic Marathon, a long-distance foot race with a distance of 42.195 kilometers. The marathon race, which is included in the modern Olympic Games, took its name from the historical route of the Athenian soldier Pheidippides, who, after the Battle of Marathon ran from the battlefield to Athens to convey the victorious news. Legend has it that he ran the entire distance to Athens without any stops, discarding his weapons and clothes to lose as much weight as possible, and burst into the assembly, exclaiming “we have won!”, before collapsing and dying
Apart from its historic significance, Marathon is renowned for an artificial lake with its impressive marble-covered dam, which was built for the primary purpose of providing Athens’ municipal water supply. 4. Lavrio
Lavrio is famous for its silver mines, which date back to prehistoric times. The mining facilities are believed to be the oldest in the world and were one of the main sources of income for the city-state of Athens, as they financed the fleet ancient Greeks defeated the Persians with, as well as the building of the Acropolis and other monuments during the Golden Age of Athens.
Modern-day Lavrio is a contemporary seaside town with a buzzing seafront, port and marina, offering traditional cafes and fish taverns. It is also a home port for several cruise ships and sailboat companies, as well as an important ferry boat hub for the Cyclades Island.
